„I began producing my study courses in 1999 in response to some people asking me to provide them with explanations of alchemical imagery and texts. I suspect they felt they had been deluged over the past years with many alchemical texts and yet they found they could not understand what they were reading there. This was partly due to the archaic language of some of these texts or the obscurities of emblematic symbolism, but it also arose from the fact that few people are able to contextualise the ideas in these texts or symbols in order to understand the difficult and obscure terms. So I began to produce more of these in-depth analyses of alchemical emblems and texts as study courses.
These are not correspondence courses and students should not expect me to be able to write to them individually on particular matters, as regrettably I just do not have time to enter into individual correspondence. sind Hippocampi. Hippocampus heißt „Seepferdchen“, und die gibt’s im Meer (rechts) und im Hirn (links) – aber sehen Sie da im linken Teil des Bildes eines? Ich nicht. Aber der Herr Julius Caesar (sic!) Arantius (1530-1589), der Anatomieprofessor in Bologna war, der sah da ein Meerpferd.
Oh, er sah sogar noch sehr viel mehr als Meerpferde! Wahrscheinlich hat er so präpariert, wie das für das obige Bild der Fall war, und hat das gesehen, was wir nun auch sehen. Statt dann aber einen Kupferstecher damit zu beauftragen, die Sache zu stechen, um ein druckbares Bild davon zu bekommen – vermutlich reichten die Forschungsgelder mal wieder nicht –, stattdessen setzte er sich nieder und schrieb in seinen vollständig bilderlosen „Observationes anatomicae“ (1579/1595):
„Dieser Ventrikel Böden, und zwar die Teile, die zur Mitte weisen, überragt […] eine sich erhebende weiße Substanz, die aus der unteren Fläche wie ein Postament hervorgehoben wird, und die sich in einen harfenförmigen oder schildkrötenpanzergleich gewölbten Körper fortsetzt und die, der Länge nach, nach vorne, zur Stirn hin, in einer unregelmäßigen Form endet und die insgesamt mit einer gebogenen Figur versehen ist, welche an den Hippocampus, das ist das Abbild des Meer-Pferdchens, oder besser, des Seidenwurms, erinnert …“

People who’ve lived with type 1 diabetes for more than 50 years share stories from the ‘dark ages’ of diabetes, including Miriam E. Tucker, who was diagnosed in 1973.
On October 22, 2023, a very special celebration took place in Baltimore, honoring people who have lived with type 1 diabetes for 50 years or longer – including me.
I’m one of the newest members of this extraordinary group, having just hit my 50th “diaversary” in early September. After my diagnosis on Labor Day of 1973 at age 9, a doctor told my parents that I would probably develop eye and kidney complications within a decade.
I still tear up when I think about how my mother kept that from me until I was in my early 20’s and it became clear that the prediction was wrong.
Today, people diagnosed with type 1 diabetes who have reliable access to modern insulin, technology, and treatment can expect to live long lives. That wasn’t the case 50-plus years ago when diabetes management consisted of taking just one or two shots a day of animal insulin and only being able to monitor using urine glucose tests.
There were no human or analog insulins, fingerstick blood sugar tests, A1C measurements, insulin pumps, or continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). All of those treatment options emerged after the 1970s.
Those who were diagnosed with the chronic condition during the 1950s and 60s had to inject less purified animal insulin using glass syringes with steel needles, both of which required sterilization after each use.
